This is our last day in Puerto Escondido. It is kind of hard to tear ourselves away from this place. We have found a groove in the congregation and in the accommodation. Anyhow I am looking forward to getting to Oaxaca for some solid spiritual food in english. Continue reading ‘Pining for Puerto Escondido’

We woke early from a beautiful nights sleep in a big matrimonial bed, as they call them here. It was too early for my liking, 7:30am in the mañana. Why? Who knows, I guess the intention was to go surfing at the crack of dawn… yeah right. The Kahuai boys had stayed up late drinking beverages watching a massive tropical thunderstorm out over the sea (the first rain we have seen so far). I wish that I had stayed up and got some photos but I was wrecked from driving through many small Mexican villages that day, and also over at least a 1000 topes (speed bumps) in search of the perfect wave. Continue reading ‘Epic Summer’
I had good intentions of going out in the service this morning, but they didn’t happen mostly due to the fact that I couldn’t find a meeting shirt that didn’t stink. The heat is killer here… I can only seem to manage one wear out of a shirt and it is destroyed. Ashley holds the record at three wears out of a single shirt… no way for me, for one thing I couldn’t stand to sit beside myself. Continue reading ‘Angel Surfing Safari’
Servicio this morning with Brother Jorge and jadiel (as a threesome), it was good fun. I think I understood a lot more spanish this morning, at least it is certainly easier to to ask questions and reply, also to ask how to say something in spanish… Como se dice en espanol? How do you say in spanish?. Continue reading ‘Three Faced to Six Faced’
After a big day yesterday we slept in till 9ish. Ashley wanted a pastry breakfast so we went to Carmen’s Cafecito for breaky, this suits me just fine since they do a killer “tortas de creme de cacahuate” in english it is a peanut butter sandwich with sliced banana on top. Continue reading ‘Meeting Taj Burrows’
Woke early for the special assembly day, Brother Eduardo had recommended that we get there early to get a seat. The SAD started at 10am. The tema (theme) of the program was “Presten atencion a como escuchan” translated is “Pay attention to how you listen” taken from Lucas 8:18. Continue reading ‘Protected: Special Assembly Day’
Seeing as my surfboard is limping on only one side fin I’ve not been surfing. Which is kind of ok… it’s at least given me the excuse to shoot some surf photography.
So I got up early in the hope of catching the Australian pro’s blowing up in the olas (waves). Disappointingly they weren’t out, but I still got some nice shots of waves that went both riden and unriden. I did the same again in the afternoon and got some good ones of Ashley surfing aswell as some other guys. Still no sign of the Aussie contingent. Where did they go? I hope they’re in town still. I so want to get a photo of Taj Burrows taming escondido. Continue reading ‘Preparing to Pay Attention’
Its been officially confirmed by our own eyes Taj Burrows, Jake Patterson, and Luke Hitchings are in town (Puerto Escondido - Oaxaca Mexico). Continue reading ‘Mexpipe Disciplined’
I worked along with Brother Filemon this morning in service, we established that I was doing the English speaking people and he would do the Spanish speaking people, sounded like a fair deal to me so I gladly accepted.
… from Switzerland and she spoke five languages …
However little did I know that Brother Filemon’s idea of english speaking people includes Italians and Germans who don’t speak a word of English! Even so I had a reasonable morning in which i met two english speaking people. One of the girls I spoke to was from Switzerland and she spoke five languages!! French, German, English, Spanish and some other language that I didn’t catch. She spoke the first three languages fluently… amazing huh? Continue reading ‘Lingo Tango’
Wednesday morning we met the group, it was an odd number so we ended up working as a threesome which was good fun (Ashley went with Brother Jorge on bible studies). We went at a snails pace because we had the oldest brother in the congregation working along with us (slow walking is good especially in this heat). I think he is about 80ish but not sure because that detail got lost a little in the translation. Continue reading ‘Feeding Mexico’
We were out in the service all of this morning in the “Bococho” area. I worked along with Graciella, the ministry was good because i managed to find three english speaking people, all of whom come from the states (Indiana, California etc…). One out of the three was interested enough to take the Awake & Watchtower and a “Keep on the Watch” brochure in english of course! So I now have a return visit that I need to make! I sat in on a study of Graciellas while she conducted it in spanish. Again I followed along in english and was better able to understand the spanish. If that makes any sense, it gives you something to reference off (in fact it’s actually better to follow along with both English and Spanish). Continue reading ‘A Peaceful Pounding’
We went witnessing this manyana (morning), Brother Eduardo takes the friday morning groups. We covered the territory just along from our hotel.
… holiday here in the winter time …
We didn’t find any Americano people but we’ve come to expect that we won’t in this part of town at this time of year since people tend only to holiday here in the winter time because of the summer heat (they head home for the cooler north american summers). Continue reading ‘Protected: Tierra Tycoon’
The 7th being a thursday is typically a big witnessing day for the local congregation here where we venture out into the mexican wilderness. Brother Filemon took the group todayand we had eight in todo (all). I worked with Brother Filemon and we drove to the territory on straight to a la biblia estudio. Continue reading ‘Protected: Congo Mango’
Wednesdays are another one of our cruisy days here in puerto. We got up at 8am or so we were going to get up earlier but that didn’t happen. It’s the best time of the day for sleeping because it’s the coolest part of the day before the heat and humidity sets in. The surf was fun and the clean (well i though so till Ashley said he saw a Puerto Cigar floating in the water) Clean as in the waves weren’t choppy. Continue reading ‘Mex Donalds’
The Sunday meeting is at 10am this manyana, It went well, still couldn’t understand much of the public talk. The Atalaya (The Watchtower) was much better because a brother kindly gave me a watchtower in Spanish to follow along with. That made it so much easier. It’s amazing how many words you can learn by having the two translations side by side. Continue reading ‘Abril Sessions’
We didn’t go witnessing today. We had another cruisy day in Puerto Escondido. We had two surfs, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Continue reading ‘You will Learn Spanish’
It was our first day in field service in Mexico today (tuesday). We met the Lazoro Cardenias congregation. We had nine in attendance, a nice solid little group. I learnt that “¨Bikin Girl”´is a regular pioneer. The territory is very different in both people and place (Duh… an obvious statement of facts). Continue reading ‘Idioma Manyana’
We slept in again today because there is no field service group on mondays. Continue reading ‘Cruisy Puerto Days’
My all time favorite surf movie is a Sietas & Olas (oh… and endless summer). This movie is truly an inspiration, in fact so much so a good mate and i are off on a journey around the world on March 23rd. This movie is about three guys who travel the mexican coast in search of lonely perfect waves and they strike gold on every turn. Continue reading ‘Siestas & Olas in Mexico’
I have just come home from seeing the Billabong-Jack McCoy Surf Film Festival for 2005. as per usual Jack sure knows how to shoot good surf footage. This year’s main feature surf rider was Taj Burrow. It goes with out saying that this guy absolutely boosts. The film also includes riders like, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Rob Machado and even Ben Stiller! Continue reading ‘Jack McCoy - Surf Film Festival’
In march of this year (2004) i took a holiday with my family to the south coast region of australia. I was so impressed with the quality of the surfing it was simply amazing… and yet i don’t think i got it on it’s best day! Continue reading ‘Gerringong - March 2004′
