Bikini Blessings

This morning we went for a walk down the hill from our hotel into the town centre (the turistica part of it). We had breakfast in a little cafe reccomended by the LPG I had frutia con yogurt y granola.

Afterward we took a walk along the main beach (the puerto) over to Zicatela Beach, its the main surf beach and where most of the hotels are. That’s where we wanted to stay for our time in Puerto Escondido. Forrest (a brother we met in Oaxaca) recommended Papaya Surf to us and said it was nice and close the beach and cheap as well.

Papaya Surf had a room for $700 pesos for to nights not bad at about AU$35 per night. The amazing thing is that we have a room for $2000 pesos for a month!! (about AU$230 pesos for both of us) So we booted back to our accomodation to pack up our stuff, we didn’t have to check out till 1pm. We remembered that we should’ve stopped by the turistica information desk in town.

… i asked about the “Testigo De Jehova” but she didn’t know …

The lady there spoke great english, we asked where the language school was and also for a map of the town area. I asked about the “Testigo De Jehova” but she didn’t know… however she sent us across the road to a hotel reception desk, she seemed to think that someone there would know? It turned out that no one knew anything… oh well.

The taxi drivers are a bit more surfboard saavy in Puerto Escondido, they have roof racks!! We transfered across town to the Papaya Surf hotel. Its has great views and is close to food and importantly the beach. Oh and the internet.

The surf tends to be only good in the mornings and afternoons when the hot off-shore desert breezes blow in. The surf then glasses up like a test tube.

At this point in time we didn’t know where the kingdom hall was, although we did have a lead, forrest told us there was a sister who worked at the “Bikini Brazil”… “go in and ask her for directions, he said…”

… a sister who worked at the “Bikini Brazil”…

Asha insisted i go and and find out where the kingdom hall is… “it’ll do your spanish good” yeah right what spanish? Anyway i go along to the “Bikini Brazil” and there was at least 5-6 ladies in the shop… I think to myself there’s no way i’m going in there to embarrass myself with my bad spanish or be seen in a bikini store!! So i walked down the street thinking i’ll go back went it’s quieter. I needed some new board shorts so i headed down the road to another store, it sold the same sort of gear. Anyway I’m trying on board shorts and i finally buy some hot blue ones.. and guess what? As i go to pay for them there is a watchtower on the counter! I nearly laughed out loud! Jehovah’s hand again, that’s the second time (that i’ve seen) on this trip… unreal. The girl that was serving me was a sister… What a joy! In bad spanish I managed to tell her i was “Testigo De Jehova” and she kindly wrote down the address and times. I almost skipped back to the Papaya Surf hotel to tell Asha the news. I contained the desired to skip down the road of a foreign country but couldn’t contain the El Grande smile i had.

The Surf Report

In the afternoon we did some reading and relaxing. The heat of the day passed so we headed up the beach to the break out in front of a El Grande Mexican flag. The surf seemed small about 3-4 foot faces… well i’ll say straight up this is a heavy wave, it’s not a respecter of man nor skill. It’s heavy at this size imagine it at the reported 16-18 foot it can get?

… split his melon open - a nasty 1 inch gash …

I don’t know how asha did it but he managed to split his melon open. A nasty 1 inch gash small in length but quiet deep, not much could be done with it. I put some anti-septic ointment on it, other than that it would need butterfly clips to hold it closed, but they wouldn’t hold unless we shaved a patch of hair out… needly to say Asha declined… vanity i say! (UPDATE: This morning it looked like it’s well on its way to healing good, it might scar… it’ll look good when he’s bald!)

Semena Santa

Hopefully Semana Santa winds up this weekend, lastnight was bad dispite the jest that asha makes of it (funny i guess), the mexican techo started at 8pm and no joke went through till the next morning. I could still hear it with blu-tac in my ears!

… the mexican techo started…

I got up at 7am and it was still going then, I couldn’t stand it any longer so i went for a surf… problem was I could still hear it out in the water… Doh!!

Hey guys, I suggest you buy your own loudspeakers, wait until the festival is over then hit them with Jimmy Barnes at full roar until the wee hours, what do you reckon? Give them a new perspective I reckon!

    Hi Justin and Ashley,
Sounds like you are finding your way around and soaking up the culture. Don’t get used to those siestas! Enjoying your web logs (blogs, I know). Don’t feel too much pressure to update, but it is a good record for your return! Can’t wait to hear some experiences in the ministry, lots of love.

    Hey Guys!!!

So cool to sit here in Taiwan and read of your experiences in South America! We had 5 days in Hong Kong, stayed in the dodgest place you can imagine - don’t think ma with be requesting a backpackers again!!! Had fun though, vistieted an English cong on Sunday and gte new release there. We arrive Taiwan about 5 days ago and had memorial here in Mandarin, really ex. There is a missionary couple here from Australia and guess what - the sister’s younger sister flats with Leah Haddad in Bethel and I had met here before I left! Such a small world in the truth hey. Mum had ridden on back of scooter to meeting shrecking all the way and I’v ridden on push bike, kind of scary when they drive on the ‘wrong’ side and no one indicates where they are turning or stopping etc!!!! Witt is ex, all apartments and people are really nice. Feels like we’ve eaten non stop - the first phrase you learn here is ‘wo bao le’ = i’m full! All so yum though. Have many excellent adventures, keep us all posted.

    Zaijian, adios - Sarah :)
