Mexico City to Oaxaca

Woke up with a funny feeling i think it was the aeropueto nacho’s funneling thru my bowels . The night was spent at Hostel Moneda (Coin), it was clean and included breakfast, free internet. Ash and i shared a four bedroom room we were the only ones in it.

the next day we awoke to the sounds of a revolution…

When we arrived at Hostel Moneda (11pm 21st of Marzo) the street was empty. The next day we awoke to the sounds of a revolution (revoluciones?), it was just the street stalls all shouting out to get your attention and sell you something, reminded me of China Town in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. We had breakfast early at about 7:30am. We both wanted to get out of the city as fast as possible so we decided to walk to the tren estaciones (Train Station) but we got turned away by the policia gusturing to us that we couldn’t take our surfboards on the mex subway. So we had to go back to the hostel and order a taxi to the Terminal Tapo to hopefully get a bus to Pueto Escondido. On arrival we tried getting tickets to pueto but they were all booked out so instead we booked a ticket to Cuidad de Oaxaca (City of Oaxaca). Once in Oaxaca we were able to book a ticket to Pueto Escondido but not leaving till friday.

The bus to Oaxaca (Wah-Hac-Cah) left 12:10pm , it took 6 horas journey time. I think leaving mexico city was the majority of the time, the city seemed to go on forever; i suppose 24 million people have got to lie somewhere.

The mountains surrounding Mexico City are beautiful, one in particular reminded me of Mount Killamanjaro - Not that i’ve been there just from photos i’ve seen. Why? because unfortunatly from out of the smog (Mt Killamanjaro doesn’t have this problem) rose up a snow cappe mountain - dispite the polution the effect was quite stunning cause all you could see was the snow on the peak and the city slums in the fore ground, but the base of the Mountain was indistinguishable.

dispite the polution the effect was quite stunning cause all you could see was the snow on the peak and the city slums…

We arrived in fading light (Cuidad de Oaxaca) our first job was to try an get the next autobus to Pueto Escondido but as already mentioned there were no tickets till friday. So i guess we are stuck here for the memorial , thats ok not planned but we can work with that.

Two taxi’s were needed (surfboard issue) to transport us to a hotel that we sourced in the Lonely Planet Guide (LPG). we got there and it was booked out… the story of our lives. This is about the time asha’s story happens.

We continued down the block to the directions of the LPG after three of four blocks of walking we came to another hotel that was listed to find that it was closed - at about 9:00pm.

By this time my shoulders are about to rip off with the weight of my pack and surfboard. So Asha suggests to stop and put down all our stuff, while i guarded it and here did a search and find mission on the hotel front. Asha found a hotel around the corner from where i was standing guard for about $350 pesos per night of two, not bad at about AU$15 each.

i left my camera pack on the pavement with my passport in it as well…

We picked up our gear and started walking… around the corner i remember i left my camera pack on the pavement!!! with my passport in it as well!!. I turned around and ran like i had Montezumars Revenge and needed a toilet fast straight back to the spot were i was standing guard… and thank goodness it was still where i left it… just slighty hidden by a big flower pot. Hot and sweaty after that bit of excitement i can tell you… don’t read this bit to much mum.

We dumped our stuff in the room and headed out for dinner. Our stomachs were begging us because we didn’t have any lunch.. we just plain fergot in the excitment of arranging our travels.

Strolling down to the Zicarlo (the main square in any mexician city) we came across a little cafe, we each had Tamal? What ever that is… it was like a tortia wrapped in a bannana leaf with chicken inside. I ordered Chocolate Aracalo, The name of the cafe and it’s hot chocolate speciality.

On the way back to our accomodation we stopped by a little cantina. We ordered beer for only a AU$1:10 each (Corona’s & Victoria’s) and i had to try a Tequila (AU$4:50).

Well thats day two done… loving the experiences so far.
